Travel Tips

Plan Ahead

It is not recommended, or required, to visit all of the attractions in one day when purchasing our Ultimate Explorer. Combo Package tickets can be used any day during the summer season. We recommend planning a day for the Banff attractions, and another day for the Icefield/Jasper attractions.

The Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre is a 2.5 hour drive from Banff townsite along the Icefields Parkway. Many prefer taking their time to sightsee the famously scenic road along the way. There are no services along the 80 km (49 miles) stretch of the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and the Saskatchewan River Crossing, so be sure to bring enough water and supplies. All five attractions have excellent food and beverage offerings.

Although Maligne Lake appears geographically close to the Columbia Icefield, the Lake can only be accessed by Maligne Road which begins at the townsite of Jasper. It is therefore a 2.25 hour drive from the Columbia Icefield to Maligne Lake Cruise, making the Banff Lake Cruise a better choice for those not visiting Jasper or short on time.

Please check each attractions operating dates and hours in advance, more information about each can be found on individual attraction pages: Banff Gondola, Banff Lake Cruise, Maligne Lake Cruise, Glacier Adventure.

Start Early

Due to their popularity, Banff and Jasper National Park can be very busy in the summer. Parking lots can become full and lines longer during the middle of the day. Plan to arrive early or late in the day to avoid busy times (11am - 3pm). You might even spot some wildlife at these times, with animals more active earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat.

Also consider taking one of our Sightseeing Tours to visit our attractions with ease onboard an informative coach tour. Our selection of tours include options with each our attractions as well as stops at the best sightseeing locations in the Rockies.

Prepare for Changing Weather

Weather is the mountains often highly variable. Temperatures on top of a mountain, on a glacier, and on a mountain lake can often be ten degrees cooler than that in town. We recommend dressing in layers, bringing a hat to shield yourself from sun, wearing sunscreen and having a rain jacket handy in case the weather changes.
