Hell or High Water - Calgary Stampedes On

May 16, 2014
In 2013 the city of Calgary was devastated by excessive rainfall and flooding affecting the downtown and its surrounding areas that led to many questioning whether the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" would happen that year. Despite the destructive floods, the city pushed forward, hell or high water and the Calgary Stampede endured another stellar year post-centennial.

Now 2014, the city is stronger than ever and will certainly put on a show to remember. Running from July 4 to July 13, 2014, the Calgary Stampede turns 102 years old.

There will be singing, (line) dancing, feasting and plenty of fun for all with many eagerly awaiting what's in store this year. Wear those cowboy hats, slip on those cowboy boots and clip that belt buckle because the Stampede demands you dress for the occasion and join in on the festivities.

Agricultural competitions, stage shows, concerts and the famous Chuckwagon Races throughout this 10-day festival make it no wonder as to why it is recognized as the event of the Canadian summer. The Rodeo is the afternoon highlight with cowboys and cowgirls taking on saddle bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding just to name a few.

Complete your evening with heavy vibrations emanating from the chuckwagons racing to the finish line and a colorful pyrotechnic display of fireworks at the Grandstand Show. There are also free live music performances throughout the park each day.

Nashville North kicks off the night with music, country line-dancing, and food. Plenty of rides and games are available for kids in the Midway Corral and the WestJet Skyride offers a higher viewpoint of the action. A plethora of food gives Stampede-goers a chance to delight in the sweet, the savoury and the different. If you’re in Canada once, this may be the best time to start or cap off a summer vacation.
