Life on the Icefield

Jun 14, 2013
Last year I spent my summer working and living at the base of the Columbia Icefield’s most accessible glacier, the Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre and Glacier Adventure is one of the most visited attractions in all of Canada, and it’s clear why.  It was the most surreal setting I’ve had the opportunity of living in. Everyday when I woke up and walked to work, I would say, ‘Good morning, Athabasca’ and on my way home I would say, ‘See you tomorrow, Athabasca’.

The setting was perfect with mild weather even with the snow that fell during the season.  I enjoyed the seclusion and isolation from the ‘big city’. Nothing says, ‘you’re in the middle of nowhere’ more than having a massive glacier next to your door.

Whether from Jasper or Banff, the drive to the Icefield is a wonder all in itself. I never missed a blink.  I also liked meeting a variety of people from places across the world on a daily basis.  I was proud to have the opportunity to be of service to them here in my home country. The helpful, kind and knowledgeable staff really helps to make it a truly unique experience for every visitor who passes through.
